Did you know Her Majesty’s Theatre is mainland Australia’s best preserved and oldest continuously operating theatre?

In fact, it was built in 1875 – making it the most intact of only four surviving nineteenth-century public theatres in Australia.

Each year more than 75,000 patrons are entertained by more than 15,000 performers who take to its stage.

It has become a much-loved venue which has played host to some of the world’s best performers while holding a special place in the heart of generations of local residents and performers.

Parts of the structure of the building are potentially unsafe and do not meet current standards.

$15 million is needed for urgent works to bring Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat up to safe and professional standard so this ageing asset can continue to operate as the performing arts centre at the cultural heart of Ballarat and the wider region for another century.

Her Majesty's Theatre is a beautiful and significant historical building which governments should value and support. It is a vibrant heart for the performing arts in Ballarat and performers well beyond. As Ballarat's arts activities and communities grow, it is important to preserve and protect the origins of the arts in this beautifully, historic city. Without Her Majesty's Ballarat has struggled to provide enough spaces to house all the arts events which take place here. Without adequate support for Her Majesty's what governments are really saying is, heritage does not matter, the arts do not matter, regional cities do not matter, communities do not matter. All of this we know to be false.

The Royal South Street Society, organisers of Australia’s oldest Eisteddfod (and still one of the largest) is an extremely passionate supporter of Her Majesty’s Ballarat. As a former owner of the theatre and now its most significant hirer, we need this beautiful building to not only be safe and open, but also taking the steps forward to truly become Australia’s premier heritage theatre. We describe Her Maj as our ‘unfair advantage’. It’s what we’ve got that other cities don’t. Our competitors love it for its prestige, history, grandeur, central location, intimate auditorium and famous raked stage. To a large degree it’s what continues to make South Street the success it is, even after 127 years of competition. Her Maj is of course wonderful on many levels for our young performing artists but it also provides a massive boost for Ballarat business. The Eisteddfod attracts around 11,000 competitors every year who bring with them families, teachers, coaches, support staff and more. Then, of course, there’s the paying audience of some 35,000. These people stay, play and spend in our city providing important economic stimulus. South Street applauds the council for its recent $5.3 million investment into the theatre and strongly urges... South Street applauds the council for its recent $5.3 million investment into the theatre and strongly urges the state and federal governments to jointly contribute the $15 million now required to take Her Maj to the next level.
After all, 40,000 on stage performances during our comps each year can’t be wrong.

We can not stand by and see the wonderful old lady in Lydiard Street disappear, this is why the 2018 board have committed to including a charity night in all of our play seasons until the end of 2019, and perhaps beyond, our first was during the run of " Pride And Prejudice " the next will be " Natural Causes " on Monday December 3 at 8pm. Let's Save Her Maj together.

Her Majesty's Theatre, Ballarat, provides the Ballarat community and visitors a rare and unique theatre experience. It draws acts and performers from all around the world to Ballarat. It completes a town by providing culture and entertainment. It makes a theatre experience which is often costly attainable to many in our community. Theatre promotes imagination and the forming of possibility, it instills a sense of hope and questioning in younger and older generations. This theatre has always being relevant and important - its history, relevance, functionality and presentation must be maintained for today and into the future.

History like this is irreplaceable from early Goldfields days - when so many performers came from so far away to entertain. The venue rich in stories and carries a lineage of times past, and more recent history in the performing arts. It has never lost relevance and should be preserved for future generations so as to continue this rich heritage. Saving places like these is never a mistake, as we know with other older venues that patrons continue to frequent them. It makes good sense in every way to save Her Majesty's.

Her Majesty's Theatre is such an important part of Ballarat's history and culture, well worth preserving. Throughout my life I have enjoyed and participated in many performances, be it in Brass Bands, theatre or musicals. There is nothing like the feeling I get, sitting in the audience, listening and seeing great shows.

I write on behalf of Bell Shakespeare in support of the Save Her Majesty’s Ballarat campaign. Bell Shakespeare and Her Majesty’s have a long association with the theatre regularly programming our touring works in their annual season. Also, we work closely to contribute to Her Majesty’s education program delivered to secondary students from across the region. Our partnership has been very successful, and we look forward to working together into the future. That is if it is still there!!! It’s future must be secured!! Her Majesty’s is a unique and iconic theatre that all touring companys look forward to visiting due to its old-world charm soaked in 140 years of theatrical folklore. With its unique raked stage to its magnificent long room where many actors have shared thespian tales with local Ballarat patrons. There is nothing like it on the Australian touring circuit. It’s called authenticity and heritage!! Modern theatres are mere empty shells in comparison. And it has its own resident ghost!!! Bell Shakespeare as Australia national touring company strongly supports this initiative to save the Maj!!

The first time I visited Her Maj I was just five years old and it was to see a BLOC production of The King & I. I saw many shows over the years and also competed in South Street many times. When I was 17 I worked backstage on my first production, doing my VCE homework in the dark in between scenes for Jesus Christ Superstar. This led to 10 years of working in the theatre for various productions. It was often hard work but produced many, many funny and happy memories that I will carry with me forever. The social, economic and artistic benefits of Her Maj cannot be denied. Many people travel here for competitions and shows, boosting the local economy and giving locals and out of towners alike a wonderful experience and access to premium theatre and shows on par (or better!) than what can be seen in the major metropolitan areas.

I took my son and hubbie to their first even show. We watched Rock of ages... powerhouse performance but the inside of Her Maj took my breath away. I often smile when I drive past Her Maj as it warms my heart with beautiful memories. Happy times x
